Elements

Every Dragon has an element.

The 5 basic elements that are currently recognized are:

~Earth

~Water

~Air

~Fire

~Spirit

There are rumors that there were additional elements at different points in history. There are also the subcatagories to the listed five.

Well first off, every dragon has an affinity for one of these elements, which is fairly easily recognized while they are still young.

Just because a dragon has an affinity for one element does not mean they will necassarily be interested in their element. For example, there are dragons with an air affinity who are more interested in fossils buried inside the earth than flight and wind patterns.

The affinity for an element is more like a natural interest or understanding of, and less of a control over.

What does having an element mean?

The 5 basic elements

Affinities

There are dragons whose affinities for one element have reached the point of control, but these instances are rare in every element. The fire element seems to be the most common element to leak from affinity to control.

For the most part dragons are wise enough creatures to not abuse any control they might have over an element. They do not lust  for power the way other creatures may.

There have been instances in the past where one dragon would lose control of their element and become a slave to the power of it. In these cases the gaurdians and strongest dragons are called upon for help.

Species

There is a relation between species and elements. It is not quite so black and white as 'every Oriental Longhair is a fire dragon' or 'every Classic European is an air dragon'.

Each dragon has the potential to have an affinity for any of the elements, with any level of power. The difference comes with liklihood.
